Singing at the presidential inauguration is a big
accomplishment for any performer. Beyoncé had the opportunity twice and for the
2013 inauguration she sang the National Anthem. This perfect opportunity was overshadowed by
talks of her lip syncing and not singing live.
Many performers lip-sync a pre-recorded track for big
events, so why is this a big deal. It would have been a different case if it’s
was not her voice, but she did not pull a Milli Vanilli. This was her voice
pre-recorded to make sure that moment was they way she wanted it. Besides
wanting to make the moment perfect, the weather that day was cold for anyone
let alone someone performing.
Whitney Houston lip-synced her performance of the National
Anthem during and it is said to be one of the best performances of all time.
Now the question is what is the difference between Whitney’s performance and Beyoncé’s.
Here is a video of Beyoncé’s amazing performance
Here is a performance by Whitney Houston that was lip-synced
Great blog on this unnecessarily controversial issue. I hate the fact that every one is blowing it up as such a horrible issue. People do not realize that there are some events that require a performer to do such a thing. What people fail to realize is that YoYo Ma's performance at the inauguration in 2009 was also pre-recorded. In my opinion, Whitney Houston gave the best National Anthem, and as you shared above, that was pre-recorded also. Whether these artists pre-record or not, it is still their voice, which means that they still had to sing it, at some point.
